Services sector retreats 2.2% in July over June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector dropped 2.2% in July over the previous month, after retreating 3.4% in May and advancing 4.8% in June. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the services sector changed -0.3% compared with July 2017, the fifth negative rate this year in this type of comparison. The cumulative index in the year stayed at -0.8%. Having changed from -1.2% in June to -1.0% in July 2018, the cumulative rate in 12 months maintained the slightly upward path since April 2017 (-5.1%).

The drop between June and July was followed by four out of the five activities investigated, highlighted by transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing, which declined 4.0%. The other negative figures came from information and communication services (-2.2%), professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%) and other services (-3.2%). Still in the seasonally-adjusted series, the index of the quarterly moving average for volume of services fell 0.3% in the quarter ended in July 2018 over the previous month, thus offsetting part of the gain registered in the quarter ended in June (0.7%). Among the sectors, that of other services (-0.8%) recorded the most intense retraction, after posting a positive change (0.2%) in June. The other negative figures came from the segments of professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.7%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.2%) and services rendered to families (-0.1%). Conversely, information and communication services (0.0%) maintained the predominantly upward path started in February.

The services sector dropped 0.3% in relation to July 2017, with a drop in two out of the five activities and in 61.4% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.8%) exerted the major negative influence. The other negative impact came from services rendered to families (-0.5%). On the other side, the most relevant positive contribution was the sector of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.8%). Information and communication services (0.1%) and other services (0.5%) also advanced.

The cumulative index in the year retreated 0.8%, with negative rates in three out of the five activities and in 57.8% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, information and communication services (-1.7%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.2%) exerted the main negative impact on the overall index. Services rendered to families was the other sector that declined (-1.8%). On the other hand, the positive contributions came from the segments of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.7%) and other services (2.4%).

RESULTS BY REGION

In the seasonally-adjusted series, 17 out of the 27 states retracted between June and July. The negative highlight came from Rio de Janeiro (-7.0%), which registered the most intense drop since the beginning of the time series, started in January 2011. Other important negative figures came from São Paulo (-2.1%) and Minas Gerais (-1.9%). Conversely, the major positive contributions came from Ceará (2.3%) and Bahia (0.9%).

The retreat in volume of services in Brazil (-0.3%) over July 2017 was followed by 19 out of the 27 Federation Units. The major negative influence came from Rio de Janeiro (-4.4%), which declined in four out of the five activities investigated, highlighted by transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-5.8%) and information and communication services (-4.1%). Other relevant negative pressures came from Paraná (-3.5%), Ceará (-6.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2.4%). On the other hand, the most important positive impacts came from São Paulo (1.2%), Minas Gerais (2.7%) and Bahia (4.1%).

Compared with the same period last year, the cumulative index in the year fell in 23 out of the 27 Federation Units. The major negative impacts in regional terms took place in Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%), Ceará (-8.9%), Paraná (-2.5%) and Bahia (-4.2%). Conversely, São Paulo (0.8%) recorded the most relevant positive contribution.

SPECIAL AGGREGATE OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The index of tourism activities declined 1.7% between June and July, offsetting the advance of 0.9% in June. In regional terms, nine out of the 12 Federation Units followed this drop, highlighted by Rio de Janeiro (-7.0%). It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts coming from the Federal District (-15.1%) and São Paulo (-0.7%). On the other side, the tourism activities in Ceará (7.4%) recorded the most important advance among the places.

The volume of tourism activities in Brazil fell 1.8% over July 2017, mainly pressed by the drop in the services of air transportation of passengers and restaurants. On the other hand, the segments of hotels and tourism operators exerted the major positive contributions. Considering the negative figure this month, the national tourism interrupted a series of three consecutive positive rates in this comparison.

Still comparing with July last year, tourism services retreated in nine out of the 12 states where this indicator was investigated, highlighted by Rio de Janeiro (-8.2%), Paraná (-9.7%) and Bahia (-4.7%). Conversely, the most important positive impact came from São Paulo (3.2%).

In the cumulative index in the year, the especial aggregate of tourism activities dropped 0.3% over the same period last year, mostly pressed by the sector of restaurants and, to a lesser extent, by air transportation of passengers. In regional terms, six out of the 12 places investigated registered negative rates, highlighted by Rio de Janeiro (-6.0%), Bahia (-4.9%) and Paraná (-4.1%). Conversely, São Paulo (2.2%) recorded the major positive impact.
