Industry up in 10 of 15 places surveyed in April

With the 0.8% increase in the industrial output from March to April 2018, ten of the 15 places surveyed had positive rates in the period, in the seasonally adjusted series. The greatest advances occurred in Bahia (7.0%), Rio de Janeiro (6.0%), Northeast Region (5.6%) and Minas Gerais (4.4%). The other places with highs were Paraná (3.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (2,.2%), Pernambuco (2.1%), Santa Catarina (1.9%) and Espírito Santo (1.4%).

The sharpest decreases in April were in Pará (-8.1%) and in Amazonas (-4.1%), both eliminating the advances reached in March. The other negative rates were in Goiás (-1.5%), Ceará (-1.3%) and Mato Grosso (-0.1%). Support material from the Monthly Survey of Industry - Regional Production is on the right of this page.

Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the industry had a positive change of 0.3% in the quarter ended in April 2018 compared to the previous month, after falling 0.7% in March, when it interrupted the upward trend (2.2%) started in May 2017. In regional terms, tem places had positive rates, with a highlight to the sharpest advances in Pernambuco (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), Espírito Santo (1.1%), Northeast Region (1.0%) and Bahia (1.0%). On the other hand, Pará (-4.1%) and Amazonas (-3.0%) had the strongest declines in April 2018.

Compared to April 2017, the industrial sector grew 8.9% in April, with increases in 13 of the 15 surveyed locations. It is worth mentioning the calendar effect, since April 2018 (21 days) had three more business days than April 2017.

São Paulo (14.8%), Santa Catarina (14.6%), Mato Grosso (14.4%), Amazonas (13.2%) and Paraná (12.8%) had the most intense increases in the month, driven by advances in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, food products and machinery and equipment, in the first place; wearing apparel and accessories and basic metals in the second; food products in the third; computer equipment, electronic and optical products (televisions) in the fourth; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, in the last one.

Pernambuco (11.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (9.6%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (8.9%), while Ceará (6.1%), Bahia (5.4%), Minas Gerais (5.4%), Goiás (4.5%) and Northeast Region (3.5%) completed the set of locations with growth in production.

On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-2.1%) and Pará (-0.7%) fell in April 2018, pressured by the negative behavior of non-metallic mineral products in the first place; and basic metals, in the second.

In the year-to-date index, compared to the same period of the previous year, the expansion of domestic production reached 13 of the 15 places surveyed, with a two-digit increase in Amazonas (21.5%). São Paulo (7.7%), Santa Catarina (7.1%) and Pará (6.8%) also grew above average (4.5%), while Ceará (4.1%), Rio de Janeiro (3.1%), Mato Grosso (3.9%), Pernambuco (3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%), Bahia (2.3%) and Paraná, Goiás (1.0%) and Northeastern Region (0.7%) complete the set of locations with positive results in the year. Conversely, Espírito Santo (-5.0%) and Minas Gerais (-0.8%) had a drop in the industrial production in this comparison.

The cumulative index of the last 12 months in the national industry (3.9%) was the highest positive index since May 2011 (4.5%) and maintained its upward trend started in June 2016 (-9.7%). Regionally, 13 of the 15 places surveyed had increases in April 2018 and 13 showed greater dynamism compared to March indexes.Among the locations, São Paulo (from 4.6% to 6.6%), Mato Grosso (from 3.9% to 5.7%), Santa Catarina (from 4.3% to 5.8%), Paraná (from 2.5% to 3.9%), Pernambuco (from -1.5% to -0.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 0.2% to 1.4%) and Bahia (from 0.4% to 1.5%) had the main increase of pace between March and April 2018, while Espírito Santo (from -0.8% to -1.3%) and Pará (from 10.7% to 10.2%) recorded reductions between the two periods.
