March 2018 / March 2017 -0.8% 1.9%

In the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the total volume of services fell 0.7% in the quarter ended in March 2018 compared to the level of the previous month, thus, intensifying the pace of decline compared to February (-0.2%).

Among the sectors, in relation to the movement of this index on margin, professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.8%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing activities (-0.7%) showed the sharpest decreases in the month.

On the other hand, services rendered to families and other services, both with a 0.5% advance in the quarter ended in March, had the highest positive rates, with the first one interrupting a downward trend initiated in November 2017. The information and communication services had a positive change of 0.1%.

Compared to March 2017, the volume of the sector fell by 0.8% in March 2018, with negative results in three of the five activities and in 56.0% of the 166 types of services.

Among the activities, the most intense negative impact came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.6%), with revenue decrease in the activities of collection agencies and credit bureaus, electronic payment solutions, engineering services and renting and leasing of machinery equipment.

The other negative contributions this month came from the segments of information and communication services (-0.9%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing activities (-0.4%), mostly due to the fall in the revenue of telecommunication in the former; and air transportation of passengers and transportation via pipeline in the latter.

The two activities with an increase in the volume of services were: other services (2.2%) and services rendered to families (1.0%), driven by higher real revenue from the activities of security and commodity contracts brokerage, in the former; and catering, food and restaurant services in the latter.

The cumulative index of the year decreased 1.5% compared to the same period of 2017, with negative rates in three of the five activities and in 55.4% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, information and communication services (-3.7%) had the main negative impact on the global index, which was mainly due to the retraction in revenue from the telecommunication and information technology advisory segments. The other negative influences came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.6%) and services provided to families (-2.4%).
