Services sector retreats 1.9% in January

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector retreated -1.9% in January 2018, after rising in November (1.0%) and December 2017 (1.5%). In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services fell 1.3% over January last year. The cumulative rate in 12 months stayed at -2.7%.

Concerning the activities in the seasonally-adjusted series, the major declines were registered in the segments of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-3.0%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.4%), whereas Other services advanced 3.8%.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the most important drops among the sectors came from Information and communication services (-5.0%) and, once again, from Professional, administrative and complementary services (-3.3%).

The services sector fell -1.3% in relation to January 2017, pressed by drops in the segments of Information and communication services (-5.0%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-3.3%); and Services rendered to families (-2.9%). On the other hand, the segments of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (4.0%) and Other services (2.5%) increased.

Services retreat in 18 of 27 states surveyed against December 2017

In regional terms, the negative changes, compared with December 2017, that mostly contributed to the overall index came from São Paulo (-1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.7), Santa Catarina (-7.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.4%) and Federal District (-2.1%). Conversely, the major positive influences came from Ceará (19.4%) and Bahia (4.3%).

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%), Federal District (-6.1%), Minas Gerais (-2.4%), Pernambuco (-5.7%) and Ceará (-6.0%) registered the most intense drops compared with January 2017. On the other hand, São Paulo (0.6%) recorded the most relevant expansion.

Tourism activities register third advance in a row in Brazil

Having changed 0.3% in January 2018 in the seasonally-adjusted series, the especial aggregate of Tourism activities recorded the third positive rate in a row, the same sequence posted by Rio de Janeiro, which rose 4.8% this month. The other advances came from Minas Gerais (2.6%), Goiás (2.3%), Federal District (1.6%), Espírito Santo (1.1%), Ceará (0.5%) and Bahia (0.3%). Santa Catarina (-5.5%) Paraná (-3.4%), São Paulo (-2.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) dropped

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, tourism remained stable (0.0%) in the overall index in relation to January 2017, showing a rise in most of the 12 places surveyed: The Federal District (13.1%), Espírito Santo (11.2%), Goiás (5.5%), Minas Gerais (5.1%) Pernambuco (4.7%) Santa Catarina (3.0%), Paraná (2.6%) and Bahia (2.0%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (-8.3%), followed by Ceará (-2.6%), São Paulo (-0.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.2%) declined in this indicator.
