In October, services sector retreats 0.8% over September

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector retreated 0.8% in October in relation to September, after declining 0.3% in September and 1.0% in August. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of rendered services changed -0.3% compared with October 2016, a less intense drop than those reported in September (-3.2%) and August (-2.6%). Considering these figures, the cumulative rate in the year stayed at -3.4% and, in 12 months, at -3.7%.

Concerning activities, the segment of Information and communication services increased 0.3% in the seasonally-adjusted series. The drops, in order, were as follows: Services rendered to families (-2.3%), Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.3%), Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-1.0%) and Other services (-0.1%). The especial aggregate of Tourism activities retreated 1.5% over September.

The seasonally-adjusted change in nominal revenue stayed at -0.2% in October in relation to September and, comparing with October 2016, the seasonally-unadjusted change stood at 5.0%. The cumulative rate in the year stood at 2.1% and, in 12 months, at 1.6%. The complete publication can be accessed here.

Compared with October 2016, volume of services retreated 0.3%, the smallest retraction in the last months. Having registered 8.4%, the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing significantly contributed to decrease this reduction, being the only positive contribution to the overall index (2.4 p.p.).

The negative contributions to the overall index were: Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.6 p.p); Information and communication services (-0.8 p.p) and Other services (-0.3 p.p). Services rendered to families recorded a null contribution (0.0 p.p.).

Piauí, Ceará and Acre were states with biggest drops in services in October

Between September and October, Piauí (-5.3%), Ceará (-4.9%) and Acre (-3.5%) posted the biggest drops in volume of services rendered. The states of Bahia (2.8%), Sergipe (2.5%) and the Federal District (1.6%) reported the biggest rises.

Compared with October 2016, Mato Grosso (47.2%), Paraná (6.3%) and Amazonas (5.6%) were the states that mostly increased in volume of services rendered. The biggest drops were registered in Acre (-12.4%), Tocantins (-11.6%) and Pará and Ceará (both with -11.1%).

Tourism activities: Rio de Janeiro falls 19.9% in annual comparison

According to the selected Federation Units, volume of Tourism activities recorded an increase in Rio Grande do Sul (3.7%), Bahia (1.7%), Espírito Santo (1.4%) and Minas Gerais (0.3%) between September and October. The drops came from Paraná (-3.4%), São Paulo (-2.4%), Santa Catarina (-2.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.0%), Pernambuco (-1.9%), Ceará (-1.4%), Goiás (-1.2%), and the Federal District (-0.6%).

Compared with October 2016, the rises came from Goiás (7.6%), Minas Gerais and Bahia (both with 2.7%), Espírito Santo (2.6%), Santa Catarina (2.3%), Pernambuco (2.2%) and Paraná (1.8%). The drops were reported in Rio de Janeiro (-19.9%), the Federal District (-15.3%), São Paulo (-7.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%) and Ceará (-2.4%).
