Cattle slaughter grows 9.0% in relation to the same period of 2016 and 7.6% in relation to Q2

In the third quarter of 2017, cattle slaughter increased by 7.6% in the quarter (7.98 million head) and 9% in comparison with the same period of 2016. Slaughter of pigs and hogs also registered an increase in the quarter reaching 11.032 million head slaughtered, the best result for this period of the year since 1997, when the survey started. There was an increase of 3.9% in relation to the second quarter of the year and 2.9% in comparison with the third quarter of 2016. The production of hen eggs also increased in both comparisons: 2.7% in relation to in the previous quarter and 7.7% in the annual comparison.
The slaughter of chicken, in turn, grew 3.3% in relation to the previous quarter (1.47 billion head slaughtered) and 0.1% compared to the quarterly index last year. With a 9.1% increase compared to the previous quarter and 5.4% in relation to the annual comparison, milk production registered 6.16 billion liters. Finally, rawhide production grew by 6.3% in the quarterly comparison (8.74 million pieces) and 4.8% in the annual comparison.

Cattle slaughter grows 9% in relation to the third quarter of 2016

In the third quarter of 2017, 7.98 million cattle head were slaughtered under some type of sanitary inspection service. This amount was 7.6% higher than in the previous quarter and 9.0% higher than the third quarter of 2016.

The slaughter of 661.98 thousand cattle head over the third quarter of 2017, in relation to the same period of 2016, was motivated by the increase in 15 of the 27 Federation Units. The most significant increases were in Mato Grosso (+173.06 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+139.23 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+123.08 thousand head), Goiás (+ 103.03 thousand head) and São Paulo (+91,19 thousand heads). On the other hand, the largest reductions were recorded in Maranhão (-22.68 thousand head), Tocantins (-17.65 thousand head), Pernambuco (-11.35 thousand head), Pará (-9.49 thousand head) and Paraíba (-8.53 thousand head).

Mato Grosso continues to lead cattle slaughter, with 16.6% of national participation, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (10.9%) and Goiás (10.6%).

Slaughter of pigs and hogs grew 3.9% in the quarter and 2.9% in the annual comparison

In the third quarter of 2017, 11.03 million head of pigs and hogs were slaughtered, representing increases of 3.9% in relation to the previous quarter and 2.9% in comparison with the same period of 2016. This result is the best in terms of quarters since the beginning of the survey in 1997.

The slaughter of 310.75 thousand more hogs and pigs in the third quarter of 2017, compared to the same period in 2016, was driven by increases in slaughter in 9 of the 25 Federation Units. Among the states with participation above 1.0%, there were increases in: Santa Catarina (+234.85 thousand head), Paraná (+110.89 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+53.15 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+20.37 thousand head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+20.14 thousand head). On the other hand, the main reductions occurred in: Rio Grande do Sul (-53.40 thousand head), Goiás (-32.67 thousand head) and São Paulo (-22.92 thousand head).

Santa Catarina continues to lead pig slaughter, with 26.8% of national participation, followed by Paraná (21.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18.4%).

Chicken slaughter grows 2.1% in the quarter and 0.1% in the annual comparison

In the third quarter of 2017, 1.47 billion chicken head were slaughtered, representing increases of 3.3% in relation to the previous quarter and 0.1% in comparison with the same period of 2016.

The slaughter of 2.07 million more chickens in the third quarter of 2017 in relation to the same period of the previous year was determined by the increase in slaughter in 11 of the 25 Federation Units participating in the survey.

Among the states with participation above 1.0%, there were increases in: São Paulo (+12.19 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (+10.80 million head), Goiás (+6.60 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+2.23 million head) and Paraná (+905.75 thousand head).

On the other hand, there were drops in Mato Grosso (-22.58 million head), Minas Gerais (-6.55 million head), Santa Catarina (-1.51 million head) and the Federal District (-4.03 million head).

Paraná continues to lead, with 31.5% of the national participation, followed by Santa Catarina (15.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (15.0%).

Acquisition of milk has the best result for a third quarter since 2014

In the third quarter of 2017, the purchase of raw milk made by establishments under some type of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.16 billion liters. This volume was 9.1% higher than that of the previous quarter and 5.4% higher than that achieved in the same quarter in 2016. Unlike the third quarters of 2015 and 2016, this quarter showed growth in relation to the same period of the previous year, although it is still below the result achieved in the third quarter of 2014 (6.23 billion liters).

The acquisition of 313.96 million more liters of milk in the national level in the third quarter of 2017, compared to the same period of the previous year, was driven by increases in 22 of the 26 Federation Units taking part in the survey.

The most intense increases were observed in Santa Catarina (+122.75 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (+71.44 million liters), São Paulo (+64.44 million liters) and Goiás (+31, 03 million liters). The biggest reduction occurred in Paraná (-38.65 million liters).

Minas Gerais continues to lead the acquisition of milk, with 24.2% of the national acquisition, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (15.5%) and Santa Catarina (13.2%), which exceeded São Paulo and Paraná.

Egg production up 2.7% in quarterly comparison and 7.7% in the annual comparison

The production of hen eggs was 839.45 million dozen in the third quarter of 2017, representing an increase of 2.7% in relation to the previous quarter and of 7.7% in comparison with the third quarter of 2016.

The production of 59.86 million dozen more eggs at the national level compared to the third quarters 2017/2016 is related to the increase in production in 22 of the 26 Federation Units with farms within the standards of the survey universe. The most intense increases occurred in São Paulo (+17.60 million dozen), Rio Grande do Sul (+8.24 million dozen), Espírito Santo (+7.08 million dozen), Pernambuco (+4.82 million dozen) and Goiás (+4.50 million dozen). The largest reduction occurred in Alagoas (-328.00 thousand dozen).

São Paulo remained the largest egg producer among the Federation Units, with 29.5% of the national production, followed by Minas Gerais (9.6%) and Paraná (8.9%).

Acquisition of leather increased 6.3% in the quarter and 4.8% in the annual comparison

In the third quarter of 2017, the tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Leather Survey - those who tan at least 5,000 whole units of cattle rawhides per year - reported receiving 8.74 million pieces of cattle rawhide. This amount was 6.3% higher than that recorded in the previous quarter and 4.8% higher than in the third quarter of 2016. As to the origin of the hides, the majority came from slaughterhouses and refrigerators, followed by services rendering, which accounted for 89% of the total in the period.

The acquisition of 404.34 thousand whole pieces of rawhide in the third quarter of 2017, in relation to the same period of the previous year, was motivated by an increase in purchases in 8 of the 20 Federation Unita with at least one tannery within the standards established by the survey. The most intense increases occurred in São Paulo (+282.49 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+244.59 thousand pieces), Pará (+138.81 thousand pieces), Goiás (+133.79 thousand pieces) and Paraná (+128.61 thousand pieces). The largest falls occurred in Tocantins (-278.89 thousand pieces), Bahia (-97.04 thousand pieces), Minas Gerais (-73.74 thousand pieces) and Maranhão (-58.21 thousand pieces).

Mato Grosso continues to lead the amount of hides received from tanneries (with 18.3% of national participation), followed by São Paulo (13.5%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (11.8%).
