PAS 2014: World Cup leverages sports companies in three regions of the country

In 2014, due to the World Cup, the gross revenue of companies dedicated to cultural, recreational and sporting activities showed the highest annual real growth among all the activities of the services sector in the following regions: North (18.0%), Northeast (37.8%) and South (20.2%).

Compared to 2013, the employed persons in the services sector increased 4.5%, while the net operating revenue advanced 6.5% and wage bills, 8.0%, both in real terms. The segment that made the greatest contribution to the growth of wage bills (2.8 percentage points) was professional, administrative and complementary services, which grew 7.6%.

The three activities that contributed to the 8.0% change of the payroll (all with 1.1 percentage points) were food services (affected by increased hiring for the World Cup), information technology (by the entry of new companies in the market) and road transportation (due to record grain crop in 2014).

From 2013 to 2014, eight of the 35 subdivisions of services recorded decrease in their number of employed persons: Telecommunications (-8.0%), Travel agencies, tour operators and other tourism services (-7.5%), Maintenance and repair of personal and household goods (-6.6%), Pipeline transportation (-2.6%), Recruitment, selection and placement of labor force (-2.6%), News agency and other information services (-2.3%), Editing and editing integrated to printing (-0.5%) and Sewerage, residue treatment, collection and disposal and recovery of materials (-0.5%).

In 2014, the Southeast remained as a leader in services, with the largest shares of gross revenue (64.9%), of earnings (65.2%) and employed persons (58.4%), in addition to paying the highest average salary (2.6 minimum wages). During this period, among the Federation Units, Roraima showed the highest real growth rate (20.3%) of the gross revenue of Services.

Between 2007 and 2014, the Central-West had the highest real growth in gross revenue from Services (87.8%), although the Southeast kept the greatest weight in the sector. These are some data from the Annual Survey of Services (PAS) 2014, which analyzes the productive structure of the Non-financial services sector in the country.

In 2014, according to the Annual Survey of Services (PAS) of the IBGE, Brazil had approximately 1.3 million companies of non-financial services, which totaled R$ 1.4 trillion in net operating revenue and R$842.1 in value added. These enterprises employed 13.0 million persons and paid R$289.7 billion in compensation. The average productivity (division of the value added by the total of employed persons) of these enterprises amounted to R$64.010.

The certainty stratum of the Annual Survey of Services (PAS), composed by companies with 20 or more employed persons, was 5.4% of the services enterprises, but generated 76.1% of the net operating revenue of the sector (R$1.1 trillion). The companies under this stratum were also responsible for 70.6% of the value added (R$594.4 billion), 78.9% of the salaries, withdrawals and other compensation (R$228.6 billion) and 65.2% of the employed persons sector (8.5 million persons).

Revenue from services had real growth of 6.5% in relation to 2013

From 2013 to 2014, in real terms, i. e., with the inflation effects already discounted, the net operating revenue of the services sector increased 6.5% and the wage bill, 8.0%, whereas the number of employed persons rose 4.5%.

The sector of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing increased 10.7% in the period and recorded the greatest contribution, 3.0 percentage points (p.p.), to the growth rate (6.5%) of the revenue from services.

From 2013 to 2014, wage bill of services grew 8.0%

The segment which contributed the most to the growth of the wage bill (2.8 percentage points) was professional, administrative and complementary services, with a rise of 7.6%.

The three activities which contributed the most to the high of 8.0 of the wage bill (with 1.1 percentage points, each) were the food services (due to the increase of recruitments related to the World Cup), information technology (by the entry of new companies in the market) and road cargo transportation (due to record grain crop in 2014). These three activities had real growth of, respectively, 14.0%, 11.8% and 4.8%.

World Cup leveraged cultural, recreational and sporting activities in three Regions

From 2013 to 2014, cultural, recreational and sporting activities had the highest real growth in gross revenue in the North (18.0%), Northeast (37.8%) and South Regions (20.2%).        This is consistent with the evolution of the investment rate in these activities, which rose from 4.8% in 2011 to 10.0% in 2012, 12.3% in 2013 and 12.0% in 2014, mainly, due to the World Cup, held in 2014. Cultural, recreational and sporting activities were also responsible for the highest percentage of job increases in the North (25.1%) and South (12.9%).

Still in relation to 2013, cultural, recreational and sporting activities also showed the greatest real growth of salaries(19.3%), with the activities of continuing education immediately after (19.1%). Both increased above the third place, road cargo transportation (14.3%).

From 2013 to 2014, employment decreased in eight subdivisions of Services

From 2013 to 2014, the employed persons in Services Enterprises grew 4.5%. In this period, 8 of the 35 sectors, divisions and subdivisions of the Annual Survey of Services (PAS), showed decrease in employment: Telecommunications (-8.0%), Travel agencies, tour operators and other tourism services (-7.5%), Maintenance and repair of personal and household goods (-6.%), Pipeline transportation (-2.6%), Recruitment, selection and placement of labor force (-2.6%), News agency and other information services (-2.3%), Editing integrated to printing (-0.5%) and Sewerage, residue treatment, collection and disposal and recovery of materials (-0.5%).

Salaries paid by Services Enterprises had a real growth of 8.0%. However, four of the 35 subdivisions surveyed had a real drop: Pipeline transportation (-8.2%), maintenance and repair of personal and household goods (-2.1%), Editing and editing integrated to printing (-1.7%) and mailing and other delivery activities (-1.4%).

In 2014, Southeast remained as leader in Services

The Southeast concentrated the largest share of gross revenue (R$1.0 trillion, 64.9%), of salaries (R$ 188.9 billion, 65.2%) and of employed persons in Services (7.6 million persons, 58.4%) in 2014. The average monthly salary paid by companies of services in the Southeast (2.6 minimum wages) was the highest one among the five Major Regions and above the average in Brazil (2.3). On the other hand, there was the Northeast with an average of 1.7 minimum wages.

From 2013 to 2014, Roraima’s figure boosted and São Paulo had the greatest weight

Among the Federation Units, Roraima showed the highest real growth rate (20.3%) of the gross revenue from services, due to the activity of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing, which contributed with 7.0 percentage points to this rate.

Another highlight was São Paulo, where the gross revenue from Services grew 5.7%, contributing with the highest share, 2.4 percentage points, to the growth rate of the sector’s revenue in Brazil (6.5%).

 

From 2007 to 2014, gross revenue of Services increased more in Central-West

Between 2007 and 2014, the dynamism of the Southeast was relatively lower than in the other regions and the average in Brazil (table 3). The Central-West stood out with the highest growth of the net revenue of services (87.8%) and the Northeast, with the greatest growth in employed persons (77.3%) and wage bill (106.1%)

Between 2007 and 2014, the net revenue from services rose 66.0%, of which 40.9 p.p. were due to the Southeast Region. The wage bill had a growth of 83.9%, to which the Southeast contributed with 52.4 percentage points. The employed persons, on their turn, grew 56.8%, with a contribution of 30.4 percentage points of the Southeast.

From 2007 to 2014, information and communication lost lead position

In 2007, information and communication services were the major sector among the services sector in Brazil, adding up to 31.1% of its operating net revenue. However, this segment lost contribution over the series and, in 2014, occupied the third position (23.1%), behind transportation services, support services and mailing (29.1%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (26.5%).

In number of companies, services rendered mainly to families remained with the major contribution, both in 2007 (32.6%) and in 2014 (31.2%). In this period, the contribution of Professional, administrative and complementary services ranged from 29.6% to 30.8%, getting close to the lead position.

In employed persons, Professional, administrative and complementary services kept the major contribution: 40.1%, in 2007, and 0.5%, in 2014. However, in the same period, the positions were changed in services rendered to families and in transportation and mailing in the ranking of the sector (table bellow).
