In 2016, 295 Brazilian municipalities had their territories changed. It is unveiled in the update of the Municipal Maps for statistical purposes of the 2016 Population Estimates, which introduces changes due to the most recent state legislation. The annual population estimates produced by the IBGE are based on the Brazilian Political-Administrative Division - DPA.

(Release updated on Jul 7, 2017, at 3:15 pm)The population estimates also reflect territorial changes determined by judicial decisions or by decisions of the Federal Prosecutor at the IBGE. The changes included in the methodology of the 2016 Population Estimates were sent to the IBGE between May 1, 2015 and April 30, 2016.
