* Seasonally-adjusted series

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a decline of 0.7% in the quarter ended in August 2016 over the previous month, after increasing in July (0.7%), June (0.7%) and May (0.6%), when it interrupted the downward trend started in October 2014. In regional terms, still in relation to the marginal movement of this index, nine places registered negative rates, highlighted by the sharp declines reported by Espírito Santo (-4.8%), Amazonas (-2.7%), Bahia (-1.1%), Goiás (-0.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.7%). Conversely, Pará (1.4%), Pernambuco (1.1%) and Santa Catarina (0.9%) recorded the main expansions in August 2016.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 5.2% in August 2016, showing negative figures in 13 out of the 15 places surveyed. August 2016 (23 days) had more two business days than August 2015 (21). In August, the most intense declines were reported in Espírito Santo (-23.9%) and Bahia (-11.3%).

Goiás (-7.6%), Amazonas (-7.4%), Mato Grosso (-6.4%) and Minas Gerais (-5.5%) also decreased more than the national average (-5.2%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%), the Northeast Region (-3.7%), Paraná (-3.5%), São Paulo (-3.3%), Ceará (-2.4%), Pernambuco (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) were the other places that posted negative rates. Pará (17.0%) registered the highest advance in August 2016, leveraged, at a great extent, by mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores). Santa Catarina (1.8%) also increased.

Compared with the same period a year ago, the reduction in the cumulative rate of the national output reached 13 out of the 15 places surveyed. Three places retreated above the national average (-8.2%): Espírito Santo (-22.6%), Amazonas (-14.0%) and Pernambuco
(-14.0%). Minas Gerais (-7.6%), Rio de Janeiro (-7.3%), São Paulo (-7.0%), Goiás (-6.9%), Paraná (-6.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.2%), Ceará (-4.7%), Santa Catarina (-4.7%), Bahia (-4.3%) and the Northeast Region (-3.7%) were the other places that recorded cumulative drops in the year.

On the other hand, Pará (11.1%) and Mato Grosso (7.3%) registered advances in the cumulative index in the year, leveraged, at a greater extent, by the positive behavior coming from mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores), in the former place; and from food products (frozen, fresh and cooled beef, and animal food), in the latter.

The cumulative rate in the last 12 months (-9.3%) in August 2016 slightly reduced the pace of loss against June (-9.8%) and July (-9.6%). Thirteen out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in August 2016, yet eight of them were more dynamic over last July.

The major gains between July and August were posted in Pará (from 6.2% to 8.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -9.8% to -8.8%), São Paulo (from -10.1% to -9.2%), Santa Catarina
(from -7.5% to -6.7%), Ceará (from -7.9% to -7.2%) and Paraná (from -9.2% to -8.5%), whereas Espírito Santo (from -16.5% to -18.6%), Mato Grosso (from 8.8% to 7.4%), Bahia (from -4.7% to -5.9%) and Goiás (from -4.7% to -5.7%) reported the biggest losses.
