In September, industrial output grows 0.5%

In September 2016, the industrial output of the country advanced 0.5% over August, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average fell (-1.1%). In the unadjusted series, in the comparison with September 2015, the industry shrank (-4.8%). It was the thirty-first consecutive negative rate in this kind of comparison and the least intense since June 2015 (-2.6%). There was decrease in the end of the third quarter of 2016 (-5.5%), in the cumulative index of the year (-7.8%) and in the cumulative index in the last 12 months (-8.8%). Industrial output increased again, but there is a predominance of negative rates among industry segments. Industry in the country is 20.7% below the level reached in June 2013. The quarterly moving average (-1.1%) accelerated the rhythm of decrease in relation to the average of August (-0.7%), when it interrupted a series of three consecutive hikes: May (0.7%), June (0.7%) and July (0.6%).

From August to September, only 9 of the 24 industrial subsectors recorded increase

From August to September 2016, only two of the four main economic categories and 9 of the 24 subsectors surveyd recorded increase of output. Among the sectors, the main positive influences came from food products (6.4%), mining and quarrying industry (2.6%) and motor vehicles, trailers and trunks (4.8%), with partial recovery of the 8.0% decrease observed in August; the second eliminating the decrease of 1.7% observed in the previous month; and the last one increasing again after recording decrease of 12.0% in the months of July and August.

Among the fourteen subsectors with falling results, the main performances came from electrical machinery and apparatuses (-8.1%), of toiletries, soaps, cleaning and hygiene products (-2.7%), non-metallic minerals (-5.0%) eand pharmaceuticals (-6.2%). The last activity increased 8.3% in August, whereas the other had recorded decreases of -1.0%, -2.5% and -5.2%, respectively.

Among the main economic categories, also in relation to August, durable consumer goods (1.9% ) and intermediate goods (1.2%) recorded increase, partially making up for the losses of August: -6.4% and -3.6%, respectively. On the other hand, capital goods (-5.1%) recorded the most significant decrease in the country, its third negative result in a row, with cumulative decrease of 8.6% in the period. The sector which produces semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods (-1.0%) also recorded decrease in September 2016 and had a cumulative loss of 4.3% in three months.

Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall recorded decrease of 1.1% in the quarter ended in September 2016 versus the result in the previous month, with acceleration of decrease versus that of August (-0.7%), when a period of three months of positive results was interrupted: May (0.7%), June (0.7%) and July (0.6%).

Among the economic categories, also in relation to August, capital goods (-2.9%) recorded the most significant decrease. The subsectors of semi-durable and non-durable conumer goods (-1.5%), durable conumer goods (-0.4%) and intermediate goods (-0.3%) also faced decrease.

Industry fell 4.8% in relation to September 2015

in comparison with the same month in the previous year, industry recorded decrease of 4.8% in September 2016, with widespread negative results in the four main economic categories, 19 of the 26 subsectors, 51 of the 79 groups and 58.5% of the 805 products surveyed. Among the activities, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-12.5%) and mining and quarrying industry (-9.2%) accounted for the main negative influences on the average of industry.

Also in comparison with the same month a year ago, capital goods (-7.2%) and durable consumer goods (-6.5%) recorded, in September 2016, the most significant decreases among the main economic categories. The sectors of semi-durable and non-durable goods (-4.1%) also recorded decrease in the month, and were the main ones below the national average (-4.8%).

The sector of capital goods (-7.2%) recorded decrease of output once more, after interrupting, last August (6.2%), 29 months of negative rates in a row. The segment was influenced by the decrease in most of its groups, the main highlights being capital goods for industrial use (-13.9%) and transportation equipment (-6.0%). The other negative rates came from capital goods for mixed use (-11.9%) and for electricity (-15.4%), whereas agricultural capital goods (6.4%) and capital goods for construction (4.1%) recorded the main positive results in September 2016.

The segment of durable consumer goods decreased 6.5% in terms of the monthly index of 2016, the thirty-first negative result in a row in this type of comparison, and the less significant since June 2015 (-0.5%). In the month, the sector was influenced by the smaller production of motorcycles (-32.5%), brown goods (-11.2%) and white goods (-13.3%). Other negative impacts came from furniture (-6.4%) and other household appliances (-1.5%), whereas the main positive result was that of cars (3.4%).

Also in comparison with September 2015, the production of semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods fell 5.5% in September 2016, the fifth negative rate in a row and above the result of the previous month (-2.0%). The perfomance in the month resulted from worse performances in all the groups: non-durable goods (-10.3%), efood and beverages elaborated for domestic consumption (-3.2%), fuels(-6.9%) and semi-durable goods (-3.6%).

The sector of intermediate goods (-4.1%) had its thirtieth negative rate in a row in the monthly index, but with the least significant decrease since June 2015 (-1.1%). In this economic category, it is also worth mentioning the negative results of groups of typical inputs for civil construction (-11.5%, the thirty-first decrease in relation to that in the previous month) and packaging (-4.1%), after increasing 1.0% in the previous month, after ninetten months of consecutive negative rates. 

Indústry acumulates decrease of 5.5% in the third quarter of 2016

The decrease of 5.5% in the third quarter of 2016 was the tenth consecutive negative rate in industry in the comparison between quarters, but the less significant of industry since October-December 2014 (-3.9%), being both comparisons against the same period a year before. The magnitute of the decrease in industry was smaller than in the period April-June 2016 (-6.6%), including three of the four biggest economic categories, the main highlights being durable consumer goods (from -16.8% to -11.2%) and capital goods (from -10.0% to -4.5%). The sectors which produces intermediate goods (from -7.3% to -5.3%) also recorded decrease of pace between the two periods, whereas the segment of semi-durable and non-durable goods (from -0.5% to -4.6%) recorded the only rise in the magnitude of decrease, and kept a less significant rate in relation to the average of industry.

Industry records cumulative decrease of 7.8% in the year

In the cumulative index in the year (-7.8%), in comparison with the same period in the previous year, the industrial sector had na overall profile of negative rates, since the four main economic categories rente a igual período do ano anterior, o setor industrial mostrou perfil disseminado de taxas negativas, já que as quatro grandes categorias econômicas, 23 dos 26 ramos, 65 dos 79 grupos e 72,4% dos 805 produtos pesquisados reduziram a produção. Entre as atividades, indústrias extrativas (-12,6%) e veículos automotores, reboques e carrocerias (-17,0%) exerceram as maiores influências negativas, pressionadas, em grande parte, pelos itens minérios de ferro, na primeira; e automóveis, caminhões e autopeças, na segunda.

Outras contribuições negativas relevantes sobre o total nacional vieram de coque, produtos derivados do petróleo e biocombustíveis (-8,1%), de máquinas e equipamentos (-13,7%), de produtos de minerais não-metálicos (-11,9%), de equipamentos de informática, produtos eletrônicos e ópticos (-21,4%), de metalurgia (-8,2%), de produtos de metal (-11,5%), de outros equipamentos de transporte (-21,4%), de produtos de borracha e de material plástico (-7,9%), de máquinas, aparelhos e materiais elétricos (-7,6%), de confecção de artigos do vestuário e acessórios (-8,7%) e de móveis (-12,9%). Por outro lado, entre as três atividades que ampliaram a produção nos nove meses de 2016, a principal influência foi observada em produtos alimentícios (2,0%).

Entre as grandes categorias econômicas, o perfil dos resultados para os nove meses de 2016 mostrou menor dinamismo para bens de consumo duráveis (-18,6%) e bens de capital (-15,0%), pressionadas especialmente pela redução na fabricação de automóveis (-18,2%) e de eletrodomésticos (-19,3%), na primeira; e de bens de capital para equipamentos de transporte (-15,8%) e para fins industriais (-10,3%), na segunda. Os segmentos de bens intermediários (-7,6%) e de bens de consumo semi e não-duráveis (-3,1%) também assinalaram taxas negativas no índice acumulado do ano, com o primeiro registrando recuo ligeiramente abaixo da magnitude observada na média nacional (-7,8%), e o segundo apontando a queda mais moderada entre as grandes categorias econômicas.
