Services sector shrinks 0.3% from August to September

In September 2016, in the seasonally adjusted series, the volume of services fell 0.3% against the previous month, after having registered decrease of 1.4% in August and increase of 0.6% in July. In the unadjusted series, compared with the same month a year ago, there was a 4.9% drop, the highest for the month of September in the series started in January 2012, and the 18th consecutive negative rate in this kind of comparison. The cumulative rate in the nine months of 2016 stayed at -4.7% and, in the last 12 months, at -5.0%.

Among the activities, in the seasonally adjusted series, the positive changes were in Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.7%) and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (0.3%). Negative rates were seen in Other Services (-2.5%); Services rendered to families (-0.9%) and Communication and Information services (-0.6%). The special aggregate of Tourism activities grew 1.5%, in the comparison with August. 

The nominal revenue changed -0.7% in relation to August, in the seasonally adjusted series, and the unadjusted change stood at 0.2%, in the comparison with the same month in the previous year. The cumulative rate in the year stood at 0.4% and, in 12 months, at 0.2%. The complete publication of the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) released by the IBGE can be accessed here.

In terms of global rate of volume, not seasonally adjusted, the contributions of the segments were: Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-2.9 pp); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.7 pp); Information and communication services (-0.7 pp); Services rendered to families (-0.3 pp) and Other services (-0.3 pp). 

Information technology services register continuous growth

Information technology services have been standing out as they go against the decreasing results of the other activities. In the series without seasonal adjustment, they have recorded continuous growth since April 2016. This  highlights the dynamic trait of the sector, which generates services of high aggregate value.

The enterprises have been hiring again computer services to cope with strategic demands, in order to keep the competitiveness and productivity levels. The greater need for non-customized software have also contributed to this growth, mainly game design tools and computer graphics software for the audiovisual segment.   

In Q3 2016, volume of services down 0.5%

In the third quarter of 2016, in the seasonally adjusted series, the volume of services had a decrease of 0.5% in relation to the previous quarter, bellow the drops in the second quarter (1.1%) and in the first quarter of 2016 (1.4%). Against Q3 2015, the rate was -4.4%. These results show a slowdown in the sector's pace of decline.

Among the activities, in the comparison with the previous quarter, Services rendered to families registered a growth of 1.1%, followed by Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (0.2%). The segment of Other services recorded drop 0.9% and Information and communication services registered no change (0.0%). Tourism activities recorded drop of 0.1%.

In the comparison with the third quarter of the previous year, all segments presented decrease, but at levels below those of the previous quarters, except for the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (- 8.9%), against drops of 6.7% in the second quarter and 5.2% in the first quarter.

Results by regions: Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso and Pará recorded greatest decrease against August

In terms of results by region, in the seasonally adjusted series of September in comparison with August, the biggest positive changes of volume were registered in Rondônia (6.5%), Sergipe (6.2%) and Espírito Santo (4.3%) and the greatest negative changes were seen in Rio de Janeiro (-5.8%), Mato Grosso (-5.3%) and Pará (-3.2%).   

In tourism activities, seasonally adjusted, by selected states, the positive changes of volume were seen in São Paulo (6.4%), the Federal District (5.0%), Bahia (4.9%), Espírito Santo (3.9%), Pernambuco (3.6%), Ceará (3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.9%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Paraná (1.4%) and Goiás (0.3%). The negative indexes were registered in Rio de Janeiro (-5.2%) and Santa Catarina (-5.1%).

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, not seasonally adjusted, just Pernambuco recorded positive changes (0.5%). The negative changes were: Bahia (-7.1%), Espírito Santo (-7.1%), Santa Catarina (-6.8%), Paraná (-6.3%), Minas Gerais (-6.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.7%), Ceará (-2.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.1%), São Paulo (-0.5%), Goiás (-0.5%) and the Federal District (-0.1%).
