IPCA-15: 0.26% in November

The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) changed by 0.26% in November and was 0.07 percentage points (p.p) above the October rate (0.19%). This was the lowest IPCA-15 for a month of November since 2007 (0.23%). The cumulative index in the year was 6.38%, well below the 9.42% recorded in the same period in the previous year. Considering the last 12 months, the index was 7.64%, below the 8.27% recorded in the 12 previous months. In October 2015 the rate was 0.85%. The complete IPCA-15 results are available here.

The group Health and Personal care (0.68%) recorded the the biggest increase, whereas Food and beverages (-0.06%) ande Wearing apparel (-0.03%) recorded decreases.

Regarding Food and beverages, in spite of the decrease in November (-0.06%) was below that in the prvious month (-0.5%), the prices of several products became cheaper. The highlight was long life milk , na imoprtant product in the basket of items consumed by families, which now costs 10.52% less, and accounted for the main impact downwards on the monthly index (-0.12 p.p.). Other highlights among food products were: pinto beans (-11.84%), red beans (-7.82%), tomato (-6.61%) and carrots (-4.31%).

In spite of the decrease, some food products contributed to the index increase, mainly crystallized sugar (3.73%), fish and related items (3.91%), potato (3.26%), beer(2,.6%) and meat(1.43%).

Considering the non-food products recording increase, the main one was ethanol, the liter of which became 7.29% more expensive, the most significant individual impact in the month (0.07 p.p.). Also importante was the item fines due to the significant increase (23.72%), as a result of the price adjustment (53%) in effect since November 1st.

Other items which affected the month's result were: vehicle insurance (2.61%). health insurance (1.07%), domestic worker (0.87%), manpower for small repair (0.87%), articles of personal hygiene (0.87%), licence plates (0,80%), hairdresser (0,67%) and gasoline (0.59%).

The highest regional index was that of the metropolitan area of Recife (0.55%), where the liter of gasoline rose 4.11%. The lowest index was that of Goiânia (-0.03%), influenced by the 4.15% increase of the item electricity , which reflected the reduction of 8.83% in fares from the 20th of October on.

For the calculation of the IPCA-15, the prices collected from October 14 to November 14 (reference) were compared with those in force from September 15 to October 13 (base). The indicator refers to families with income from 1 to 40 minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology adopted is the same as in the IPCA. The difference lies in the period of data collection.
