June 24, 2015 09h43 AM | Last Updated: June 13, 2017 12h25 PM

In 2013, the participation of the Southeast Region in the total sales value of industrial services and products corresponded to 57.8%, a percentage below that registered in 2012 (58.9%). The South Region recorded a participation of 20.6% in 2013, an increase of 0.8 p.p. over the previous year. As to the sales value of products, diesel fuel maintained the leadership taken back in 2012, registering R$ 67.3 billion.

The three sectors that led the ranking of participation in the gross value added - difference between the gross value of the industrial output and the cost of the industrial operations - concentrated 33.2% of the overall Brazilian industry. They were: manufacture of food products (14.9%), manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.7%) and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (8.6%).

The Annual Survey of Industry (PIA) Product collected information on the production line of Brazilian industrial enterprises with 30 or more employed persons, making available information on the amount produced and sold, and on the sales value of around 3,500 products. In 2013, about 40.6 thousand industrial enterprises took part in the survey, which collected information from 54.9 thousand local units. Altogether, these local units recorded values of about R$ 2.0 trillion, representing 87.0% of the sales value of the whole sector.

The Annual Survey of Industry (PIA) Enterprise collected information on the universe of enterprises with 1 or more employed persons and unveiled that, with 2.0% more enterprises than in 2012, the Brazilian industry proceeded with a greater participation of enterprises with 500 and more employed persons. They accounted for 68.4% of the revenue of the industrial activity. The number of employed persons rose 2.7% from one year to the other.

Number of industrial enterprises grows 2.0% in relation to 2012

In 2013, Brazil had about 334 thousand industrial enterprises with one or more employed persons, which employed around 9.0 million persons, an average of 27 persons per enterprise. The number of enterprises was 2.0% bigger than in 2012, when they were 329 thousand. The number of employed persons increased 2.7% in one year (they were 8,8 million in 2012).

In 2013, the enterprises of the industrial sector recorded a net sales revenue of approximately R$ 2.7 trillion, led by the performance of the enterprises with 500 or more employed persons, which concentrated 68.4% (R$1,8 trillion) of the participation in the overall revenue of the Brazilian industry.

The gross value of production and the intermediate consumption were, respectively , R$ 2.5 trillion and R$ 1.8 trillion. As a result, the value added - difference between the gross value of production and the intermediate consumption - reached R$ 776.4 billion. The gross value added - difference between the gross value of industrial production and the cost of the industrial operations - was R$ 1.1 trillion. The cost of the industrial operations reached R$ 1.3 trillion.

Expenditure on raw materials represents 41.2% of industrial costs

In 2013, the total costs and expenditures of the industrial enterprises were R$ 2.8 trillion. Expenses with personnel reached 14.0% of the total, a contribution similar to that of 2012 (14.3%). The consumption of raw materials accounted for 41.2% of the total expenses, maintaining its highest percentage in the structure of costs and expenses and very close to that registered in 2012 (41.3%). The cost of resale goods recorded a lower participation compared with that of the previous year: 7.1% in 2013 against 7.7% in 2012. The consumption of fuels and the acquisition of electricity added up to R$ 64.6 billion in 2013, representing 2.3% of the total, whereas payment for services provided by third parties and miscellaneous consumption for repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment hit R$ 88.9 billion, representing 3.2% of the total. The other costs and expenses together represented about 32.1% of the total.

The total amount of investments made for the fixed assets - enterprise's tangible goods - reached R$ 215.1 billion. Considering enterprises with up to 29 employed persons, the value was R$ 6,3 billion, approximately 3,0% of the total invested. Concerning the investments on enterprises with 30 or more persons employed, industrial machinery and equipment stood out, as in 2012, adding up to R$ 92.8 billion. This sector maintained the highest participation in the total investments, though losing relative participation between the two years, changing from 46.5% in 2012 to 43.2% in 2013. The acquisition of land and buildings pointed to a relative increase in the participation between the two years, changing from 13.3% in 2012 to 15.7% in 2013. The resources applied to transportation means reached 3.6% of the total in 2013, whereas other acquisitions (furniture, microcomputers, construction in progress, etc.) accounted for 34.6%.

Ten of 29 sectors concentrate 68.2% of the gross value added

In 2013, the activities that registered the highest participation in the overall industry in terms of gross value added - difference between the gross value of the industrial production and the cost of the industrial operations - were: manufacture of food products (14.9%); manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.7%); manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (8.6%); extraction of metallic minerals (6.7%); manufacture of chemicals (6.5%); extraction of oil and gas (5.1%); manufacture of machinery and equipment (4.8%); basic metals (4.7%); manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (3.8%); and manufacture of plastic and rubber products (3.6%). Together, these sectors concentrated 68.2% of the overall industry in 2013.

Comparing with the previous year, the first nine industrial sectors maintained the same position in the ranking as in 2012. However, the sector of manufacture of plastic and rubber products, which ranked in the eleventh position in 2012, rose to the tenth in 2013, exchanging positions with the sector of manufacture of non-metallic mineral products.

Diesel fuel maintains the top position in sales value in 2013

Having sold R$ 67.3 billion in 2013, diesel fuel remained the leader in the ranking of the 15 industrial products that mostly stood out in terms of sales value. Its performance surpassed that of iron ores and their concentrates (R$ 54.8 billion) and that of cars with engine displacement higher than 1,500 cm³ and lower than or equal to 3,000 cm³ (R$ 47.8 billion).

Considering the 100 greatest industrial products and services in terms of sales value, the total sales reached R$ 1.1 trillion in 2013, which represented 52.0% of the sales revenue of all the enterprises surveyed. This same relation of industrial products and services represented 51,6% in 2012.
