In a meeting with foreign journalists that write news about Brazil, held at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, on March 25, Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, showed that the reach of information generated by the Institute goes beyond national boundaries. An example is the role played by the IBGE as a coordinator between National Statistical Offices of all G20 countries to transform their reality.

“This is an effort made by the IBGE to be in contact with the National Statistical Offices in all the G20 countries, and we count on the support from multilateral organizations of the UN system, such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, UNFPA. They are our partners in this dialogue promoted by the aiming at collaborating to improve the Brazilian reality in association with that of other countries,” says Mr. Pochmann.

On December 1, 2023, the city of Rio de Janeiro took over as leading capital of G-20, with Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim as the G20 Embassy, up to November 2024. It is in this context that the IBGE and other statistical institutes from G-20, according to Mr. Pochmann, will bring “elements upon which the ministers, who will meet in Brazil, can build more favorable actions to decisions made by the chiefs of states who will be in Rio de Janeiro engaged in additional discussions about G20 actions.”

IBGE is on the agenda of the international media

The objectives of this first media with professionals that cover Brazil were to show the expansion of the role played by the IBGE in the international scenario, to describe the Institute’s international initiatives throughout the years, and also to provide information about current and future actions.

“The IBGE has taken an important step today, here at the G-20 house in Rio de Janeiro, to have an important dialogue with international correspondents that cover IBGE and that, in a certain way, were not fully aware of the relevance of the Institute regarding the production of information that go beyond our national,” sais Mr. Pochmann.

The IBGE is one of the most important agencies for the production of geosciences and statistics in the world, having one of the main databases of public indicators among G20 countries. Nevertheless, the target is to expand this information database and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge.

The president presented to journalists some projects such as the IBGE cooperation in the censuses of African countries, the investment in research with the homeless, the expansion of surveys that can guide public policies aimed at the improvement of labor market, mainly for persons who are out of the workforce.

On April 9, one more meeting will be held at the “G20 House”, this time with journalists working for the national press, Brazilian authorities, and embassy representatives, among others. On the occasion the IBGE will present indicators produced about G20.
