Industrial production rose in seven of the 15 places surveyed by the IBGE in January 2021, compared to December last year. The positive result was driven by the good performance of the motor vehicle sector in São Paulo, the main positive influence. The data are from the Regional Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM Regional), released today (10) by the IBGE.

São Paulo represents approximately 34% of Brazilian industrial production. In January, the industry in that state rose 1.1%, mainly due to the positive influence of the motor vehicle sector, guaranteeing the third consecutive positive rate and accumulating, in this period, an increase of 3.5%. In the monthly index, compared to the same period of the previous year, the motor vehicle sector also led the 5.6% growth in the state industry, witha highlight to the increase in the production of tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, followed by the sector of machinery and equipment, with an increase in the production of elevators for the transportation of people”, explains survey manager Bernardo Almeida.

Pará (4.4%), Pernambuco (3.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.9%) had the sharpest advances in the transition from December 2020 to January 2021. In addition to the greatest increase in absolute terms, Pará is the third in influence. The state recorded the second consecutive month of growth in production and accumulated, in this period, a gain of 9.7%, due to the positive influence of the non-metallic minerals sector and the mining and quarrying sector. Pernambuco, eliminated part of the losses recorded in December (-3.0%) and November 2020 (-0.6%) and has basic metals as a positive influence.

“Rio de Janeiro stands out for the positive influence of the mining and quarrying sector, more specifically in the petroleum extraction. This is the third positive result with 3.2% accrued for Rio de Janeiro, which represents the second biggest influence on the national index ”, adds Mr. Almeida.

The biggest falls reached Espírito Santo (-13.4%) and Amazonas (-11.8%), with Amazonas being the biggest negative influence on the national index. This is the second consecutive negative rate for the state with a cumulative drop of 16.3%. In January, the decline was due to the negative performance of petroleum products and other transportation equipment.

Espírito Santo was affected by the negative influence of basic metals and mining and quarrying sectors and offset the previous month's gains of 7.3%. The other falls were in Bahia (-3.2%), Mato Grosso (-3.2%), Northeast Region (-2.1%), Ceará (-1.1%), Minas Gerais (-0.5 %) and Goiás (-0.5%).

“Bahia's industrial production was affected by the fall in the motor vehicle sector, with the shutdown of a car plant. While Mato Grosso suffered a negative influence from the food sector, which plays a relevant role in the state's industry,” says Mr. Almeida.

In relation to January 2020, industry as a whole grew by 2% and eight of the 15 surveyed places showed positive results. Some results are significant, such as Pará (13.3%), Paraná (11.5%) and Santa Catarina (10.1%), which showed double-digit expansions.

“The growths can be explained by a low basis of comparison, as, since the end of 2019, the industry had been presenting a declining pace of prodcution, even before the pandemic arrived”, explains Mr. Almeida.

Bahia (-13.9%), Mato Grosso (-13.9%) and Espírito Santo (-11.5%) indicated the sharpest decreases in January 2021 in relation to January 2020. In Bahia, the sector of motor vehicles was the most affected in this type of comparison, due to the fall in the production of cars and car parts. Mato Grosso was affected by the drop in food products, wood products and coke, petroleum products and biofuels, whereas Espírito Santo, by the drop in basic metals, mining and quarrying industries and food products.
