The industrial production of the country grew, from January to February, in 11 of the 15 surveyed places, according to data from the Regional Monthly Survey of Industry, released today (8) by the IBGE. The places that most influenced the national increase of 0.5% were Pará, with 7.2%, Rio Grande do Sul, with 3.1% and Paraná, with 2.1%.

“Pará was the first in influence and, with this result in February, the state eliminates the January decrease of 5.5% and sets the sharpest rate since August 2019, when it reached 8.4%. The sectors that influenced Pará’s rate in this comparison were basic metals, non-metallic mineral products and wood products”, explains survey analyst Bernardo Almeida.

The industrial output in Rio Grande do Sul, which recorded the second positive rate and a cumulative gain of 7.0%, was influenced by the tobacco sector, a typical activity in the region. Paraná is the third positive influence, with 2.1%, recording the third consecutive rate and a cumulative gain of 9.1%. It is possible to conclude that the major influences in this result were the sectors of motor vehicles and food products”, analyzes Mr.Almeida.

Other places also showed positive rates: Espírito Santo (5.9%), Pernambuco (4.5%), Mato Grosso (3.8%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Minas Gerais (1.1%), Ceará (1.0%), Northeast Region (0.4%) and Goiás (0.3%). The negative results were from Bahia (-3.2%), Amazonas (-2.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.0%) and São Paulo (-0.4%).

“Due to this result, São Paulo reverts part of its 2.1% industry expansion achieved last month. This decrease might be related to a negative influence in the sectors of petroleum products and biofuels. Food products might also be considered a negative influence”, says Bernardo Almeida.

São Paulo, the largest industrial park in the country, was the major negative influence in the national result when comparing February with the same month of the previous year. In this comparison, the industrial sector indicated decrease of 0.4% and São Paulo recorded -3.1%.

“The influences in this slope were motor vehicles, leveraged, mainly, by the reduction in car production, petroleum products, pressured, mainly, by the decrease in diesel fuel, fuel oil and gasoline; and also food products, leveraged by the fall in the production of ice cream and popsicles, frozen beef and concentrated orange juice”, he adds.

Moreover, in the comparison with February 2019, the places that recorded decrease, besides São Paulo, were Minas Gerais (-6.3%) and Espírito Santo (-4.5%), Amazonas (-3.0%) and Goiás (-1.4%). Meanwhile, Pernambuco (12.3%), Rio de Janeiro (9.7%), Pará (7.5%), Northeast Region (6.4%), Paraná (3.6%), Bahia (3.3%), Mato Grosso (3.2%), Santa Catarina (2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.2%) and Ceará (1.9%) recorded positive results.
