Cattle slaughter increases, reaches 8 million head in Q2

Cattle slaughter reached 8.08 million head in the second quarter of the year, an increase of 2.4% over the first quarter of 2019 and of 4.1% compared with the same period last year. These are the first results of the Livestock Statistics, released today by the IBGE.

 The survey also pointed out to an increase in the slaughter of pigs and hogs and in the production of hen eggs. 11.39 million head of pigs and hogs were slaughtered, representing rises of 5.1% and 0.7% against the first quarter and in relation to the second quarter of 2018, respectively. The production of hen eggs was of 930.93 million dozens, an increase of 5.8% and 2% in these same comparisons.

Chicken slaughter, milk acquisition and leather acquisition also rose in relation to the same period a year ago, though they fell against the first quarter of the year.

 Chicken slaughter increased 3.6% over the second quarter of 2018 and retracted 1.5% compared with the first quarter of 2019, adding up to 1.43 billion head.

 The acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection was of 5.86 billion liters in the second quarter of 2019, an increase of 7.1% over the volume registered in the same period in 2018. On the other hand, it retracted 5.4% in relation to the amount collected in the first quarter this year. 

 The tanning houses investigated by the survey reported to have received 8.39 million whole cattle raw hides in the second quarter. This amount represented an increase of 1% over the second quarter of 2018 and a reduction of 1.1% in relation to the first quarter.  

 The definitive results by state of the Livestock Statistics will be released on September 12.
