Chicken egg production reached 928.42 million dozens in the fourth quarter of 2018, the highest number in the time series, started in 1987. The information is part of the preliminary data of the Quarterly Livestock Survey, released today by the IBGE.

The amount recorded represents a high of 1% over the previous quarter and 8.2% over the fourth quarter of 2017. "This increase has been verified every quarter," says survey manager Bernardo Viscardi. He adds that "because it is a cheap protein and easy to consume, the demand is increasing."

Besides, the survey recorded the slaughter of 1.42 billion chicken head in the fourth quarter, with downs of 0.7% over the third quarter and of 0.9% in the comparison with the same period in 2017.

Furthermore, 8.09 million cattle head and 11.10 million hogs and pigs were slaughtered, a decrease of 2.3% and of 4%, respectively, in comparison with the third quarter of 2018. In relation to the fourth quarter of 2017, there was a silght increase, of 0.4% both for bovine and swine animals.

The complete results of the Quarterly Livestock Survey will be put out on March 14 and, besides the definite data of the quarter, the publication will bring the result for the year and by Federation Units.
