A wedding party full of relatives and friends, with best men, a cake with dolls on it, a honeymoon trip - that is the dream of many people, but not a real possibility for a parcel of the population. Opposite to what is commonly seen in traditional families, the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community did use to have the basic right of getting married and enjoying all the civil benefits such a union brings: inheritance, division of estate, joint adoption of children and many others.

According to the IBGE's Vital Statistics, between 2013 and 2016, 19.5 thousand couples - approximately five thousand per year - said their "I do's" in civil registry offices. Same-sex marriages make up about 0.5% of the total annual unions in the country. Read in Retratos Magazine no. 7 the stories of some couples who have finally succeeded in having their relationship officially recognized and, by extension, citizen rights respected as they should be.
