Retail trade offset in October the downward trend recorded since April 2015, in the cumulative index over 12 months. The indicator changed by 0.3%, influenced by pharmaceuticals (0.3%) and other personal and household articles (0.7%), which include online sales of department stores.

That is what the Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC), released today by IBGE, reveals. The PMC also pointed out that if, on the one hand, the retail trade fell by 0.9% compared to September; on the other, it grew 2.5% compared to October 2016 - the seventh consecutive positive rate.

According to the survey manager, Isabella Nunes, these results make it possible to identify a noticeable recovery of the retail trade, despite the drop when compared to September: "One possible explanation is that consumers have postponed their purchases, since October precedes a month marked by promotions".

The extended retail, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction materials, also offset a long period of decline in the cumulative index in 12 months, with growth of 1.4% - the first positive result since June 2014.

Isabella claims that sales of construction materials and vehicles have been growing double digits since August: "It is an improvement motivated by the income of families who can renovate their houses. While the increase in the sale of vehicles is due to better financing conditions for term purchase. "
