Bottled gas rockets up inflation forecast for October

With three increases in a row, the price of bottled gas (5.72% up) was one of the main responsible of the high in the Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) of October, released today by the IBGE. The index stood at 0.34% this month, above the rate recorded in September (0.11%). The cumulative index in the year is at 2.25%, whereas the cumulative index over the last 12 months stood at 2.71%.

Bottled gas was the item with the highest individual impact on October's IPCA-15, with 0.07 percentage points. The increase of 5.72% was the biggest recorded for the product since October 2015. Meanwhile, the group Housing, to which it belongs, had a high of 0.66% and exerted an impact of 0.10 percentage points on the total index.

As a whole, the sector's influence only loses to Transportation (impact of 0.11 percentage points), affected by the increases in fuels: gasoline had a high of 1.45% between September and October, even with the slight deceleration in relation to the previous period, when the rate was of 3.76%. Another factor to be considered is the 7.35% rise in airfares.

The group Food Products, in turn, recorded a new decrease in October (-0.15%), although lower than the -0.94% of September. The lows in garlic (-9.88%), carioca beans (-5.95%), crystallized sugar (-3.63%) and long-life milk (-3.52%) were the main responsible for the decrease. On the other hand, meat (0.54%) and fruits (1.40%) increased in the period.

In the indexes by area, the Metropolitan Area of Curitiba had the biggest high in prices (0.66%), followed by Salvador (0.64%). Conversely, the sharpest drops occurred in the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro (-0.08%) and Recife (-0.07%).

The IPCA-15 is an indicator, calculated by the IBGE, to measure the inflation between the second half of a month and the first half of the reference month. It comprises families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, and also Brasília and Goiânia.
