The slaughter of hogs and pigs increased 2.6% in Q1 2017 in relation to the same period in the previous year, with a total output of 10.46 million head. It is the best result for a first quarter since the beginning of the IBGE time series, in 2017.

Researcher Angela Lordão, supervisor of Livestock Activity at the IBGE, reports a trend to increase in the results relative to the same quarter. “In 2017, besides the increase of expors, there was decrease in the price of corn, the main component in animsal feed, which represents about 70% of the production cost of hogs and pigs”, she says.

The researcher also mentions the recurrent replacement of beef for chicken and pork, cheaper options for periods of limited purchses. There have been recent marketing policies aimed at expanding the consumption of pork. “New and smaller cuts have been introceduced in the market, in addition to a more positive view of pork observed nowadays”, she says.

Against Q4 2016, thee has been an increase of 3.2% in the number of head slaughtered. Angela Lordão points out that reduction is not unusual, once the fourth quarter is usually marked by an increased consumption of pork due to end-of-year festivities.
